New and used Chinese heavy duty trucks are one of the most cost-effective ways to add capacity to a mining haul, a construction site or a long-haul fleet. The models you see most often on African and South American roads — SINOTRUK HOWO, SHACMAN Delong, FAW Jiefang, Dongfeng, Foton Auman and JAC — share a simple advantage: parts are widely available, and any workshop familiar with European or Japanese trucks can service them without special tooling. Buy new when you want the machine built to your own specification from day one; buy used when you want the lowest cost per tonne moved. When you buy a used unit that has already been through a proper workshop, you start working with a truck whose wear parts, fluids, brakes and tyres have been dealt with, instead of budgeting for repairs in your first months of operation.
Choosing the right configuration matters more than the model number. For mining and quarry work, a 6×4 or 8×4 dump truck with a reinforced body and a 371–460 hp engine handles steep gradients and poor roads; for container and general freight, a 6×4 tractor head with 40–45 t gross combination weight is the standard choice; for urban distribution and agriculture, a 4×2 light or mini truck keeps running costs low. Check the steering side before you commit — West and North Africa and South America are left-hand drive markets, while Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and South Africa are right-hand drive.
